When I lived in Ohio and Iowa a spring ritual involved hunting mushrooms. Even in the desert when I come upon a group of cacti clustered like this it reminds me of those days in the woods in search of the prize morels.

The prickly pear are getting ready for winter. The last of the fruit is dropping off the pads.
Hedgehogs are a small cactus that usually only grow to about 10 to 12 inches. You will find a lot of them shorter. They grow in clumps or small families. Most of the year you drive right by them. But when they bloom they really catch the eye.
